Biography

Matthew Gagnon is the Chief Executive Officer of the Maine Policy Institute, a free-market policy think tank based in Portland, Maine. At Maine Policy, he has overseen an organization that has more than quintupled in size during his tenure and has been repeatedly recognized for its influential work.

In addition to his work at Maine Policy Institute, Matt also serves as the host of the WGAN Morning News, the highest-rated news talk radio program in Southern Maine. He has won recognition for hosting an intelligent, thoughtful discussion of current events through open dialogue, and reasoned debate with a broad audience of various political ideologies. The Maine Association of Broadcasters has recognized him three times with awards for Best Election Coverage.

Matt was also a columnist for the Bangor Daily News for more than thirteen years. His columns twice earned him the honor of being named the Maine Press Association’s Best Columnist, in 2018 and 2019.

Prior to returning to Maine in 2014, Matt spent nearly ten years in Washington, DC, working in politics. He served as Director of Digital Strategy for the Republican Governors Association for three years, where he was recognized by Campaigns & Elections Magazine as one of the top campaign strategists in the country. He has also spent time on Capitol Hill as Director of New Media Communications for United States Senator Susan Collins. In 2010, he was Deputy Director of Digital Strategy at the National Republican Senatorial Committee. He has been involved with more than 100 high-profile political races in 49 states.

Matt is also an accomplished writer, photographer, graphic designer, and web developer. He is an avid swimmer and cyclist. He and his wife have five children, and live in Yarmouth.
